Description

Wanted to do some Sailor Moon artwork but was stumped for ideas. Enter an online Random Word Generator! (Thanks to www.magatsu.net/art/index.php)

'Caged Bird' made me immediately think of Crystal Tokyo and how unhappy yet resigned Neo Queen Serenity seemed. My personal belief is that by coming back in time, Chibi Usa (and Pluto, who allowed it) actually caused Crystal Tokyo to exist and therefore also its anemic version of Neo Queen Serenity. The 'winged' part of her dress has been folded to fit her within the central spire of the crystal palace, intended to represent her inability to be free in this time/place. The crystal key that allowed it all to happen is resting on top of the spire, the key to her cage.

I don't have a scanner or, since upgrading my OS, any imaging software so this photo is all I can manage for now. Critical critique welcome.

Hey! This is good, my friend! I really like solemn elegance of the whole piece. I think you did a great job of capturing the style of Sailor Moon as well, and the idea that the key is placed right on top of the prison is just kind of spooky! Is that lifted from the show, or did you come up with that?

Funnily enough, the proportions totally fit the style, and the only wonky things are the forearms and the bust line. I know they can be tricky to get the perspective right if you goal was keeping the upper-arms close to the body, but if you brought the elbows further away from the waist, it would make a longer and more elegant forearm. ( And it would fit the dramatic beauty of the show, I think it'd really work!) The shoulders though, are AWESOME. A good clean line making an elegant shape.

Hands are tricky and just need practice to get the hang of drawing them, but overall I like the way they are clasped together, and since they're raised slightly, it helps give the picture a pensive feeling, despite it's tranquility.

As for the bust, I appreciate that you went to put detail there! But since you went over it so darkly, (and admittedly it's in the chest area so people will look there) it distracts from the overall picture. If you used lighter lines there, even if the details don't come out perfect, it'll save you some grace.

Despite all of that, you actually put mood into this picture, and THAT is awesome in it's own right! And except for the arms, all of the proportions look pretty strong. The hips are the same size; they match and compliment the shoulders. The dress tapers off beautifully, and the spirals in the dress/coat tails are a really GOOD detail that draws the eye.

Overall, I'm really happy that you keep drawing, and you're posting it here so I can witness it! Keep it up, babe!
